Wenzhou Leakage Corrosion Hardware Products Co.,Ltd.
The world is built from low-quality concrete and rusting steel, with corrosion serving as the primary cause of infrastructure deterioration.
Corrosion is a function of both environmental factors and material properties; the appropriate corrosion protection strategy must be tailored to the specific environment. Examples of corrosive environments include atmospheric exposure, while protection methods may involve coatings or the selection of specific steel grades. Real-time sensor data—such as electrical resistance (ER) measurements, galvanic corrosion currents, current density, electrical conductivity, impedance, and temperature/humidity levels—are essential for monitoring.
Corrosion mechanisms and rates vary by zone. Uniform corrosion typically dominates in submerged zones, while the tidal zone experiences higher corrosion rates due to wet-dry cycling. In the splash zone, pitting is the primary mechanism—manifesting as small black spots on the surface—which is particularly concerning given the frequent lack of effective cathodic protection.
Sensors deployed in the intertidal zone include electrical resistance (ER) probes for continuous material loss monitoring, CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) sensors to detect the presence of water, and linear polarization resistance (LPR) sensors to measure electrochemical corrosion rates. This setup allows for a direct comparison between two independent monitoring technologies. During the Q&A session, it was noted that future analysis will involve time-integration of conductivity signals to identify shifts in corrosion status. Regarding pitting calculations: the theoretical cumulative pit depth is derived by aggregating depth estimates—sourced from literature for various relative humidity ranges—and weighting them by the duration spent in each humidity range. This yields a single predicted maximum pit depth, rather than a volumetric distribution.
In scenarios such as corrosion under insulation (CUI), monitoring involves temperature and humidity sensors. Mitigation strategies can include the installation of nodes for dry air injection, the use of vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs), and the implementation of duckbill-style drainage/venting valves (which can be paired with leak collection devices to monitor for fluid discharge). Other measures include fire-resistant flange leak-detection bands or the application of VCI-impregnated self-fusing tapes on high-risk components such as valves, flanges, elbows, tees, and nozzles.
We have consistently advocated for the use of real-time, high-fidelity sensor data—specifically for monitoring corrosion rates—to transform sensor technology from simple data collection into a proactive tool for corrosion protection and asset integrity management.
