Data center Corrosion protection

Corrosion protection for servers is a critical factor in ensuring data center security, extending equipment lifespan, and minimizing downtime. As data centers evolve toward higher densities and environmental pollution (such as sulfurous gases and salt spray) intensifies, corrosion issues affecting server circuit boards and components have become increasingly prominent.

The following are key strategies and specific measures for server corrosion protection:

1. Environmental Control (The Core Strategy)

Temperature and Humidity Control: Maintain relative humidity (RH) between 40% and 55%. Excessive humidity (>60%) accelerates electrochemical corrosion, while low humidity (<30%) increases the risk of static electricity. Avoid drastic temperature fluctuations to prevent condensation.
Air and Chemical Filtration: Install High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters to remove dust. In areas with industrial pollution or coastal locations, install chemical filtration media (such as activated carbon or potassium permanganate-impregnated alumina) to adsorb corrosive gases like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and ozone (O₃).
Environmental Monitoring: Adhere to ASHRAE TC 9.9 standards by assessing server room air quality at the G1 level (mild, no corrosion risk) and monitoring the corrosion rates of copper and silver coupons in real-time.

2. Hardware and Material Protection

Conformal Coating: Apply a thin protective film (e.g., polyurethane, silicone rubber, or acrylic resin) to the surfaces of server motherboards (PCBs) and critical components to isolate them from moisture and corrosive gases.
Corrosion-Resistant Material Selection: Use precious metal platings (such as gold or palladium) or corrosion-resistant alloys for component pins and connectors, replacing materials prone to corrosion like silver or copper.
Sealing and Structural Design: Employ relatively sealed designs for critical power modules and control units to minimize direct contact with ambient air.

3. Operations and Maintenance

Regular Dust Removal: Dust is hygroscopic; once it absorbs moisture, it can form an electrolyte that accelerates corrosion. Regularly clean the interior of servers using anti-static tools. Blanking panels and airflow optimization: Properly utilize cabinet blanking panels to strictly isolate cold and hot aisles, thereby preventing localized overheating and the accumulation of contaminants caused by air turbulence.
Site selection: Data center locations should, as far as possible, avoid chemical plants, sewage treatment facilities, landfills, and coastal areas subject to heavy salt spray.
