Is moisture monitoring alone sufficient to manage Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)? Just as dark clouds on the horizon signal potential risk without revealing exactly when or where a storm will strike—or how severe it will be—CUI management strategies relying solely on moisture detection have limitations. While moisture ingress is an early indicator, it does not reveal the corrosivity of that moisture; moisture detection alone cannot truly assess CUI risk. To help asset owners identify areas of potential risk without destructive inspection, it is crucial to monitor the corrosive environmental conditions created by moisture. Why is moisture detection alone insufficient for addressing CUI? While detecting moisture under insulation reflects environmental conditions that could lead to corrosion, it cannot measure whether CUI is actually present, its severity, or its progression. In fact, corrosion does not necessarily occur in every area where moisture ingress is present.
To move beyond guesswork and make data-driven decisions, asset owners can utilize moisture-impedance testing and corrosion sensors to track CUI-specific corrosion rates under high-humidity conditions. Corrosion rate monitoring: the missing link in CUI risk assessment. By using corrosion sensors, operators can obtain precise, asset-specific data, allowing them to distinguish between potential risk and actual corrosion.
This approach facilitates: targeted maintenance—focusing resources on areas with confirmed corrosion and reducing unnecessary interventions; reduced unplanned downtime—minimizing unnecessary shutdowns caused by false alarms from moisture-only detection; and enhanced asset integrity—supporting data-based decisions to extend asset life and reduce unexpected failures. A multi-layered approach to CUI management: the most effective CUI management strategies never rely on a single data point. While moisture detection provides valuable information, it must be complemented by corrosion monitoring to gain a comprehensive understanding of the CUI risk profile facing an asset.
